How we got these numbers

Every city figure comes from our electrician cost guide for that city, which lists its sources at the bottom: industry price surveys and local companies’ published rates. The typical price is the middle of the cities’ low ends to the middle of their high ends, rounded. A job only counts cities that price it the same way, and a city with no figure for a job shows a dash. These are benchmarks, not quotes: what you pay depends on the job, and pros’ quotes vary.

FAQs

How much does an electrician charge for a service call?

Typically $80 – $180 to come out and diagnose the problem, across the 31 cities we track. The lowest is Oklahoma City ($65 – $155) and the highest New York ($150 – $350). Some electricians credit the fee toward the repair if you hire them for it, so ask when you book.

How much does a 200A panel upgrade cost?

Typically $2,200 – $4,900, from Atlanta ($1,600 – $2,300) to New York ($3,500 – $9,000). Moving the panel, replacing the service mast or meter base, or rewiring old circuits push it higher, and the utility usually has to cut and restore power.

What does it cost to add a new circuit?

A new dedicated circuit, for a dryer, a window AC or a kitchen appliance for example, typically runs $400 – $1,100 in the 30 cities we track. The distance from the panel and whether walls have to be opened drive most of the difference.

How much does it cost to install a Level 2 EV charger?

About $800 – $2,500 for the installation in the 11 cities where we have local figures. If the panel is full or too small for another large circuit, an upgrade may be needed first, and that costs more.

Why do electricians cost more in some cities?

Labor rates, permit fees and local code all differ. In our data a 200A panel upgrade costs about 3.2 times as much in the priciest city as in the cheapest. The city table below shows where yours falls.
